Xiaomi is the rising star of the smart phone industry. Founded in 2010, the company has already started to outsell Samsung in terms of number of smartphones sold in China. It had 5.3 percent of the global market in the third quarter of 2014, according to IDC (International Data Corporation). It ranks number 4, following Samsung, Apple and Lenovo. Fueled by its huge success in China, Xiaomi has set its sights on the big emerging markets. It’s already started selling in India and plans to push into Indonesia as well as parts of Latin America.

In September 2014, Xiaomi has launched a fitness tracker called the Mi Band joining in the fast-growing smart wearable market. Mi Band is a basic pedometer / sleep tracker that can be connected via Bluetooth to a smartphone.

Healthcare Wearables – Revolution or Hype?
Some said that wearable devices are going to transform the medical care industry in unimagined ways, turning science fiction in reality.
–   ABI Research (Allied Business Intelligence Inc) has projected that by 2016, wearable wireless medical device sales will reach more than 100 million devices annually.
–   Senior analyst at IMS Research said that the market for wearable technologies in healthcare “is projected to exceed $2.9 billion in 2016, accounting for at least half of all wearable technology sales.”
Others said that healthcare wearables are overly hyped, and will eventually face their reality checks.
–   Juniper Research over in the UK was putting out a report forecasting that fitness devices, not true health monitors would “dominate the wearables market” worldwide until at least 2018;
–   According to Juniper Research: “Counting steps is all very well, but will not keep consumers interested unless that information can be contextualized and made useful for them”;
–   Surveys have shown that half who use mobile fitness trackers to keep tabs on their workouts or diets stop using the programs within six months;
–   Even industry insider, like Dr. Matt Patterson, president of AirStrip Technologies, a San Antonio-based maker of mobile patient monitoring software, said “I can tell you right now doctors do not care about your Fitbit data.”
NACSA is hosting an event: “ipreCare life-sensing health monitoring platform introduction”, bringing you opportunities to get to the forefront of healthcare wearables industry and talk to the industry pioneers.

Solar Industry is experiencing a new phase of development. Ever expending solar farms for utilities, and new applications to the point of use.
Solar Utility replaces other sources like oil, coal burning and must beat $0.3-0.5/kWhr generation cost. While Solar Point-of-Use applications provide convenience and in some market, replaces high end user cost, like in Italy and Philippines. In Philippines the electricity cost $0.25/kWhr and up.
I will introduce a business model to best use solar energy to deliver/replace Point-of-Use electricity. It will be a long lasting process till solar is wide spread.
Philippine market is a small market with strong demand, mainly due to the high cost and less stable electricity. There are also over 7000 islands can be great market as it develops.
Through stores, we introduce the products, sales model, maintenance, as well as best way to meet customer needs.
We expect a lot of challenges yet great demand.
Similar to China, we expect competitions once our business start to pick up. We have strategy to differentiate and keep as number one choice.

New Opportunities and Trend of Semiconductor in China

China Connection, Events on February 8th, 2014 Comments Off on New Opportunities and Trend of Semiconductor in China

China is the biggest semiconductor market worldwide reaching 40% share. While it becomes a mature business in Silicon Valley, the semiconductor industry in China is welcoming the 2nd wave ramping up, accompanying with the explosion of the mobile internet applications.

The new leaders of China government have realized the importance of the semiconductor for future economic growth. In fact, China has imported more IC devices than oil in 2012. The new leaders understand that the semiconductor industry is the core of any other high tech industries. Since mid of 2013, expectation has been raised that the China Government will come out new policy to stimulate the semiconductor business in China.

NACSA (North America Chinese Semiconductor Association) and co-organizer CAISS (Chinese American Information Storage Society) with help of IC-Coffee in China have invited Mr. Alex Lin, CEO of Honestar (北高智), the #2 IC distributor in China, to give us a talk on “The Semiconductor Value Chain in China during the Age of Mobile Internet”. We have also invited Ms. Eileen Yan to talk about the China Policy “02 Special Project” (02专项).

If you’re the executive of an IC company, and care about the China market, or if you’re a Chinese professional and wish someday to go back China for new start-up, you should come.

Time: 02/11/2014, Tuesday, 7-9pm.

Address: 1320 Ridder park Drive, San Jose, CA 95131 (LSI, the 100 people conference room).

Semiconductor’s Enabling Roles in the Era of Big Data

NACSA Technical Seminar Series: Semiconductor’s Enabling Roles in the Era of Big Data

Events on October 19th, 2013 Comments Off on NACSA Technical Seminar Series: Semiconductor’s Enabling Roles in the Era of Big Data

Do you know the following facts?

  • The new data that companies and individuals produced and stored in 2010 is equivalents to filling more than 60,000 US Libraries of Congress
  • Netflix video streaming accounts for 32.7% of peak U.S. downstream traffic
  • Electricity used by data centers worldwide increased by about 56% from 2005 to 2010
  • Electricity used in global data centers accounted for more than 1.5% of total electricity use
  • Companies chose to locate their data centers in colder places, like Alaska for lower cooling cost
  • Every minute
    • More than 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube. That’s more than four days of video uploaded each minute!
    • Google receives over 2,000,000 search requests
    • Apple has more than 50,000 app downloads
    • Facebook users share over 700,000 contents
    • Twitter users send over 100,000 tweets

The era of big data is upon us. Any time consumers going about their day – communicating, browsing, buying, sharing, searching – create enormous trails of data. The vastly distributed sensors, GPS in smartphones, connected consumer-electronic devices, even in industrial machinery, power plants, pipelines… generate an entirely new category of data. This wave of big data is likely to reshape how business operates.

Optimizing Big Data to propel business opportunities

How this vastly distributed data is collected? How to extract signal from noise in the sea of data? How to make swift smart decision, in real time?  Semiconductor devices play enabling roles. The big wave of big data provides tremendous opportunity for semiconductor players. We invite leading professionals to give insightful perspectives on this growingly important trend. Please come and join us in this event and take the opportunity to network with industry professionals and entrepreneurs. Looking forward to seeing you at the seminar!
