Beyond Semiconductor: The New Trend of Technology

Beyond Semiconductor: The New Trend of Technology

Have you seen Google self-driving car?  Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technologies are providing the vision for a new generation of driverless vehicles. LiDAR, a concept similar to RADAR, uses laser light instead of radio waves.  LiDAR sensors are currently used in a variety of military and commercial autonomous vehicle applications, as well as 3-D mapping, surveying and other applications.

LED technology has advanced to enable broad new applications and exciting opportunities in recent years. Projection LEDs have been engineered to deliver extremely high optical output and to begin replacing mercury discharge lamps with an environmentally friendly, solid-state light source.  Pico-projector design uses color LEDs.  As LEDs are getting brighter and smaller, pico-projectors can become more popular as stand-alone, used in car HUD and infotainment center console or embedded with other products like camcorders and mobile phones. In this seminar, you will get a good understanding of the architecture of a projector engine and the design rules of optimizing LED.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery has the promise of the future of power and portability.  Li-ion has the best energy density of commercial power tool batteries, a very slow self-discharge rate up to six times longer than a NiCad, and superior energy to weight ratio.  Li-ion technology is drawing huge interest and investment.  As the quest for small, powerful, long-last, fast-recharging batteries heightens, Li-ion will be in the spotlight.

In 2013, we are one step closer to the greatest new revolution in technology mankind has ever experienced.  In this seminar, we have invited four industry veterans and distinguished speakers: Dr. Juchmann, product marketing manager of Velodyne LiDAR, co-presenters Dr. Andrew Lin, senior product marketing manager of OSRAM and Francis Nguyen, and Dr. Song Han, Senior Director of Technology of Amprius to share with us their extensive experience and visions in the trending technologies, like LiDAR, LED projection, and Li-ion battery.  We cordially invite aspiring professionals to join us at this very interesting technical seminar. Take the opportunity to learn more about the industry trend and its outlook, and mingle with other professionals and entrepreneurs.  Looking forward to seeing you at the seminar !

Wolfgang Juchmann, Ph.D., Product Marketing Manager, Velodyne LiDAR

WolfgangWolfgang Juchmann has more than 13 years of international experience in technical sales, product management, and marketing of industrial lasers and optical products for a variety of applications. The combination of Juchmann’s technical background, commercial experiences, and his passion for customer satisfaction are unique factors that enable him to profitably lead new product developments as well as manage existing product portfolios with an intimate awareness for the customer’s expectations. Juchmann started his international career as a Technical Sales Engineer with SCANLAB AG, Munich, Germany promoting high speed galvanometer scanners for laser-based applications, where laser beams need to be focused and deflected at highest speeds.  In 2001, Juchmann moved to Mountain View, CA and accepted the position of Product Manager for Spectra-Physics with responsibilities for their Diode-Pumped Solid State lasers which is used in semi-conductor and electronics manufacturing. In 2009, he took on new responsibilities with Coherent, Inc. in Santa Clara as Senior Product Manager for the Direct Diode and Fiber Systems Business Unit. In this role, he managed a $12M product portfolio including lasers up to 8kW of laser power for laser heat treatment and laser cladding, an application lab, and was responsible for new business development.  Juchmann earned his Ph.D. in Laser Spectroscopy of combustion flames and thin-film deposition plasmas from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.

Andrew Lin, Ph.D., Senior Product Marketing Manager, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors

andrewAndrew is a 23-year veteran in the optoelectronic industry, with 12 years at TI DMD at Central Research Labs, and RFIC products at Wireless BU (1989-2001), plus over 2 years in FIC working on projection displays, and 7 years in the LED industry in both RD and Business prior to joining OSRAM. He was granted 28 US patents during his career.  He also involved with leaderships and activities of professional societies, e.g. Standard Committee, “Taiwan LED Street Light Alliance”; SPIE Microelectronic Packaging and Laser Processing; Gordon Research Conference; Modern Engineering and Technology Seminars, Taiwan. Andrew received his Ph.D. from Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, San Diego, and his B.S. from Electrophysics, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan.

Francis photo smallFrancis Nguyen, Technology Consultant, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors

Francis Nguyen, retired, was a Senior Product Manager at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc., where he was responsible for marketing products used in LED displays, LCD backlighting and projection displays.  He had held various engineering and product management positions at OSRAM. Prior to joining OSRAM/Siemens in 1991, Francis had worked in the semiconductor industry for 20 years and his experiences included automatic assembly equipment designing and manufacturing engineering in a semiconductor assembly facility.  Francis holds a B.Sc. in E.E. from the University of Hong Kong.  He has presented and published various articles on the LED field, and an active member of SID, Society for Information Display.

Song Han, Ph.D., Senior Director of Technology, Amprius

songDr. Song Han is currently the senior director of technology of Amprius Inc., a high energy density lithium ion battery developer. Song started Amprius as a founding member in 2008 and has led the development of technology and intellectual properties since then. Prior to that, he worked on advanced material development for different applications including integrated circuits, memories, sensors, and OLEDs, etc. Song published over 40 papers. His papers were cited more than 3,000 times in the past five years. Song received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering – Electrophysics from University of Southern California and B.S. degree in Chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China.
