The following cities will be targeted for this year’s China Trip:

Oct. 14-17: Sichuan (Chengdu, Chongqing)
Oct. 18-25: Shanghai and Yangtze Delta (Suzhou, Wuxi, Zhengjiang, Hangzhou, Jiangying, etc.).
In addition, we will be attending the IC China conference as well as visiting high-tech zones, local governments, large/small companies, VC's, etc.
As always, NACSA is working hard to make the China Trip as effective and efficient as possible for both the delegates and our hosts/sponsors in China, which include the Chinese governments, industrial parks, VC’s, etc. To this end, we have made special arrangements for them to provide feedback to your business plan prior to the trip. This provides excellent opportunity for you to get early feedback on what your target audience wants so you can fine-tune your proposal. Again, stay tuned for the details.

As many of you may have already known, China has been widely expected to lead the global economic recovery post the US housing bubble and global financial market meltdown. And judging from the leading market indicators (performances of the stock and housing markets, etc.), China seems to be on track to be fulfilling this perceived role. Momentums are also building for China to join the rank of leading economic superpower. These impressive economic accomplishments should provide plenty of motivations for wanting to join NACSA’s 2009 China trip, to be held this Oct., as a way to learn firsthand about startup opportunities in China. As a warm-up event leading up to the trip, NASCA is holding a seminar on how to establish high-tech businesses in China. Speaker Bios
Jang Fung Chen, VP of Engineering (Retired), ASML
Mr. Chen became the VP of Engineering at ASML MaskTools in 1999 when ASML acquired his company MaskTools, which he co-founded in 1997 when it was spun off from MicroUnity Systems. MaskTools focused on technology software products that were based on his co-invention, known as Scattering Bars Optical Proximity Correction. From 1983 to 1997, Mr. Chen was with various start-up companies working on advanced CMOS device fabrication. Holder of 46 US patents, Mr. Chen graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, in 1983, with multiple MS degrees in lithography, optical instrumentation, and imaging science. Since his retirement from ASML in 2008, Mr. Chan has been working on his own ideas.
Jianlong Dong, Sci-Tech Consul, Consulate General of China in San Francisco
Besides being a Sci-tech Consul, Mr. Dong is also the president of Chinese Oversea Talented Resource Development Foundation. He was a counselor of international collaboration in Department of Science of China. In the past 20 years, he has devoted himself to helping high-tech leaders and venture capitals to identify, promote, and/or commercialize prospective business projects.
Ron Cai, Partner In Charge/Chief Representative, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP Shanghai Office
Mr. Cai has more than 20 years of legal experience assisting clients in U.S.-China business projects. His list of clients include Bloomberg, DuPont, Eaton, Marriott International, Microsoft, Nike, Starbucks and TNT.
He focuses on foreign investment in China, regulatory compliance and dispute resolutions in China, and international transactions. Mr. Cai also advises clients on a wide range of legal issues, including mergers and acquisitions, employment and labor law, intellectual property, licensing, retail and franchise, real estate, and commercial lending. He represents Chinese companies in their business transactions and litigation in the U.S. Mr. Ron speaks and writes frequently on U.S.-Chinese business issues.
Sonny Wu, Managing Director, GSR Ventures
Mr. Wu manages GSR’s Beijing office, focusing on semiconductors, new materials, and new energy sectors. Prior to GSR, Mr. Wu held key executive positions at Nortel Networks and led the investment in Shanghai ASMC (HKEX: 3355) in 1994. He served as Managing Director for Shanghai Nortel Semiconductors Corp and Guangdong Nortel Telecom Corp in 1995. Mr. Wu grew up in China, and completed his education at the University of British Columbia, University of California at Berkeley, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan Fellow).
Everett X. Wang, PhD, Founder, EverteQ Inc.
Dr. Wang founded EverteQ Inc. in 2006, a company specializing in developing high energy efficient transportation vehicle. Prior to founding EverteQ, Dr. Wang spent 13 years at Intel (from 1993-2006) serving various roles in the TCAD, Photonic Operation, and Design Technology Service divisions. A PhD from University of Texas at Austin with 15 issued and pending patents, Dr. Wang has authored and co-authored 47 journal and conference papers. His professional interests include advanced transport models for nano CMOS devices, quantum size effects in thin body MOS, quantum theory for mobility modeling under mechanic stress, optimal control and dynamical modeling of complex system.

NACSA Seminar Summary
Under the worst economic crisis ever since the Great Depression, NACSA held a timely seminar to help members better understand and find career opportunities in the greentech industry and in China. With a fitting title of “Combating Economic Downturn: Opportunities in Greentech Industry and the Thriving China Market”, the seminar was held on 5/3/2009 at the Orrick Law Firm in Menlo Park, CA.
Despite being the most impacted during this downturn, semiconductor industry is expected to play the same critical role in the greentech economy of tomorrow as it has in the information economy of today. As key components in the so-called smart grid and smart appliances, semiconductors specifically are widely expected to help producers to harness alternative energy sources more effectively, grid operators to distribute them more intelligently, and end customers to consume them more efficiently.
The keynote speakers assembled for the seminar are top-notched experts in smart grid and power management technology, solar semiconductors, and China-US relations in the areas of science and technology. Ms. Holly Zhang, NACSA’s VP of marketing, kicked off the seminar with an introduction of NACSA’s signature event, China trip 2009.
The first presentation was given by Mr. Eric Daniels, VP of technology in BP Solar. Mr. Daniels demonstrated various means of green energy generation and highlighted current developments and challenges in solar technology. In the second presentation, Ms. Jane Wu, president of eVillage Solar, presented her vision of solar energy for the next decade. She made the case for the increasing demands of green energy and the rapid growth of photovoltaic industry. In the third presentation, Mr. Mark Bramfitt, Principal PM of PG&E, described how Smart Grid technology works as well as the commitments of PG&E as a leader in utility industry. Last but not least, Mr. Jianlong Don, Consul of Consulate General of PRC in SF, gave the last presentation. He explained China’s strategy of re-igniting the Chinese economy and growth engine and the important role of science and technology in the aftermath of the present financial crisis.
The presentations were well received by NACSA’s members as well as outside attendees. Totaling 130 strong overflowing the conference room, the audience showed a great deal of interest in the presented topics, particularly the role semiconductors will play in smart-grid technology. The speakers received so many questions that the MC had to stop some of them to keep the time. After the seminar, many people from the audience stayed in discussing with the speakers and exchanged ideas with each other. Lots of people also showed interest in the China trip, requesting details for the business proposal and time and itinerary of the trip.

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) has recently predicted that semiconductors will power the Greentech economy of tomorrow much as they have the Information economy. Destined to play a pivotal role, semiconductors allow people "to harness alternative energy sources more effectively, distribute them more efficiently and intelligently, and consume them in the most efficient manner." About the Speakers:
Eric Daniel, VP of Technology, BP Solar
As VP of technology at BP Solar, Mr. Daniel is responsible for the development of alternative sources of silicon, optimized and next-generation casting and wafering, cell, module, and systems technology. In partnership with universities around the world, these programs are supported by the US Department of Energy’s Solar America Initiative and various EU technology support initiatives. Mr. Daniel has over 15 years of experience in manufacturing and commercial roles. He began his solar career working on the development of low-cost solar cell technology for Solarex Corporation. The success of this work led to the start up and management of production lines in Maryland and Europe.
Previous to his current role, Mr. Daniel served as VP of Component Sales for BP Solar, responsible for merging and building global distribution sales following the merger of BP Solar and Solarex. Before joining BP Solar, Mr. Daniel worked for Siemens Solar and was responsible for marketing, utility sales, and product development/management. In addition, as Vice President for Strategic Marketing and Technology with IPC Westinghouse, he was responsible for the commercialization of solar, wind, diesel hybrid power supplies for rural electrification, oil & gas industries, communications, telemetry, security, defense, residential and utility power markets.
Jane Wu, President, eVillage Solar
Ms. Wu is the President of eVillage Solar, a clean energy system integration company. Her main responsibilities include formulating market penetration strategy, branding products, improving operational efficiency, and creating new business models with both upstream and downstream partners. She is also a partner of Index Capital responsible for GreenTech and IT investment.
Trained as a physicist, Ms. Wu has 20 years of experience in marketing, sales, venture investment, research, business/technology development in semiconductor and solar sector. Before joining eVillage Solar, Ms. Wu served as Corporate Officer, VP of Business Development for JA Solar, responsible for forging global strategic alliances, establishing corporate marketing and supplier chain management function, and directing technology development as well as licensing business. She is also responsible for US operation and R&D center. Prior to JA Solar, Ms. Wu served 11 years at Applied Materials, where she had various technical and managerial roles from technology development, field engineering support, business management, and corporate strategy. Ms. Wu also worked 4 years at Rockwell Semiconductor on device process engineering for space wireless communication applications. In addition, Ms. Wu co-founded CiWest Corporation, which was acquired by a major semiconductor foundry.
Mark Bramfitt, Principal PM, PG&E
Mr. Bramfitt is the principal program manager in PG&E leading the company’s energy efficiency program. His team supports customers in the Silicon Valley and throughout northern California, providing a utility industry-leading program portfolio for data centers and information technology infrastructure, including training and education, technical support, and financial incentives and rebates. From 2006 through 2008, these programs delivered over 12 megawatts of peak energy demand reduction, with a program budget of over $21 million.
Mark also leads the Utility IT Energy Efficiency Coalition, promoting the adoption of PG&E’s program and service models by over thirty utilities throughout North America. A professionally-licensed mechanical engineer, Mark has worked in a variety of technical and management positions at PG&E in his twenty-year-plus career, primarily in the energy-efficiency, account services, and corporate communications areas.
Mark is politically active in the Sonoma Valley, serving as an elected Director of the Valley of the Moon Water District, the chair of the Sonoma Valley Groundwater Basin Advisory Panel, and on several other community boards.

NACSA Proudly Presents: Zhenjiang in Silicon Valley 2009
Rich in historical and cultural heritage with an area covering 3847 kilometers, Zhenjiang 镇江(http://www.zhenjiang.gov.cn) is a rapidly growing city in the southwest of the Jiangsu province along the Yangzi River.
