NACSA proudly presents: "The Do's and Don't of Establishing High-tech Businesses in China"

China has been widely expected to lead the global economic recovery post the US housing bubble and global financial market meltdown. And judging from the leading market indicators (performances of the stock and housing markets, etc.), China seems to be on track to be fulfilling this perceived role. Momentums are also building for China to join the rank of leading economic superpower. These impressive economic accomplishments should provide plenty of motivations for wanting to join NACSA’s 2009 China trip, to be held this Oct., as a way to learn firsthand about startup opportunities in China. As a warm-up event leading up to the trip, NASCA is holding a seminar on how to establish high-tech businesses in China. In this seminar, a distinguished list of speakers and panelists will share their knowledge and experiences on the subject as well as from past China Trip. Topics to be discussed include:
  • Past China Trip experience and how to prepare an effective business plan for the trip.
  • Sources of supports for oversea entrepreneur (central government, local government, private, self, etc.)
  • How to get funding from government and private investors
  • Advices on starting up high-tech business in China
  • The economy in China and the current legal and policy environment for doing business in China
  • New Chinese labor law and its impact on businesses in China
  • Legal environment for-tech, VC, and PE industry in China

Speaker Bios

Jang Fung Chen, VP of Engineering (Retired), ASML

Mr. Chen became the VP of Engineering at ASML MaskTools in 1999 when ASML acquired his company MaskTools, which he co-founded in 1997 when it was spun off from MicroUnity Systems. MaskTools focused on technology software products that were based on his co-invention, known as Scattering Bars Optical Proximity Correction. From 1983 to 1997, Mr. Chen was with various start-up companies working on advanced CMOS device fabrication. Holder of 46 US patents, Mr. Chen graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, in 1983, with multiple MS degrees in lithography, optical instrumentation, and imaging science. Since his retirement from ASML in 2008, Mr. Chan has been working on his own ideas.

Jianlong Dong, Sci-Tech Consul, Consulate General of China in San Francisco

Besides being a Sci-tech Consul, Mr. Dong is also the president of Chinese Oversea Talented Resource Development Foundation. He was a counselor of international collaboration in Department of Science of China. In the past 20 years, he has devoted himself to helping high-tech leaders and venture capitals to identify, promote, and/or commercialize prospective business projects.

Ron Cai, Partner In Charge/Chief Representative, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP Shanghai Office

Mr. Cai has more than 20 years of legal experience assisting clients in U.S.-China business projects. His list of clients include Bloomberg, DuPont, Eaton, Marriott International, Microsoft, Nike, Starbucks and TNT.

He focuses on foreign investment in China, regulatory compliance and dispute resolutions in China, and international transactions. Mr. Cai also advises clients on a wide range of legal issues, including mergers and acquisitions, employment and labor law, intellectual property, licensing, retail and franchise, real estate, and commercial lending. He represents Chinese companies in their business transactions and litigation in the U.S. Mr. Ron speaks and writes frequently on U.S.-Chinese business issues.

Sonny Wu, Managing Director, GSR Ventures

Mr. Wu manages GSR’s Beijing office, focusing on semiconductors, new materials, and new energy sectors. Prior to GSR, Mr. Wu held key executive positions at Nortel Networks and led the investment in Shanghai ASMC (HKEX: 3355) in 1994. He served as Managing Director for Shanghai Nortel Semiconductors Corp and Guangdong Nortel Telecom Corp in 1995. Mr. Wu grew up in China, and completed his education at the University of British Columbia, University of California at Berkeley, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sloan Fellow).

Everett X. Wang, PhD, Founder, EverteQ Inc.

Dr. Wang founded EverteQ Inc. in 2006, a company specializing in developing high energy efficient transportation vehicle. Prior to founding EverteQ, Dr. Wang spent 13 years at Intel (from 1993-2006) serving various roles in the TCAD, Photonic Operation, and Design Technology Service divisions. A PhD from University of Texas at Austin with 15 issued and pending patents, Dr. Wang has authored and co-authored 47 journal and conference papers. His professional interests include advanced transport models for nano CMOS devices, quantum size effects in thin body MOS, quantum theory for mobility modeling under mechanic stress, optimal control and dynamical modeling of complex system.
